Job Description

Special Olympics Ireland is seeking a Sports Officer. This is a specified purpose contract (maternity cover) with immediate start. The Sports Officer will be the lead in the promotion and coordination of the organisation’s Coach Education and Training Programme.  Working with the Sports Department of Special Olympics Ireland, the role will involve working closely with Regional Sports Development Officers in five regional offices, Tutors and other volunteers alike. 

The person appointed will also support the development of the sports specific plans for the 2018 Special Olympics Ireland Games, to be held in Dublin in June 2018.   He/she will be initiate the recruitment and training of volunteer teams and work with these team in the run up to the Games.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Promote, enhance and support the delivery of coach education throughout the Special Olympics programme.
Be the key point of contact with Coaching Ireland in regards to Coach Education.
Support the Special Olympics Tutors for their delivery of coach education courses.
Play an active role in contributing to the organisations’ Sports Programme and support the established Sports Development Teams as and when required.
Identify, recruit, train and support volunteers to lead key sports competition roles for the 2018 Special Olympics Ireland Games
Promote good governance in all aspects of the programme.
Liaise and work with relevant staff and volunteers in the implementation and roll out of these programmes and initiatives.
 

Participate in cross-functional training as required from time to time.
Develop and adhere to project plans and budgets and undertake any other assignments as may reasonably be requested by the Director

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 
1. QUALIFICATIONS
 
Essential

• Relevant third level qualification e.g.  physical education, sports science, sport development, sport/leisure management

2.  EXPERIENCE
 
Desirable

• A minimum of one year’s experience in a multi-faceted sports role
• Prior experience working in a relevant sector, e.g. voluntary, sports, leisure & recreation
• Prior experience of working with volunteers

3.  KNOWLEDGE
 
Desirable

• Understanding of how community clubs might operate

4.  SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 
Essential

• Excellent communication and organisation skills
• Ability to work as part of a team and also on one’s own initiative
• Ability to prioritize in order to meet deadlines and timescales
• Strong interpersonal skills
• A strong eye for detail

• Is competent in use of MS Word, Excel and Outlook and can access documents on a server system and on the web

• An understanding and a comfort with working with databases in your daily routine
• Prior experience pulling reports as requested

7.  OTHER REQUIREMENTS
 
Successful candidate must be prepared to:

• Work a 35 hour week over a seven-day period
• Work evenings and weekends as required depending on the needs of the role
• Be prepared to travel frequently as part of the role
• Be prepared to provide Special Olympics Ireland with personal information on the appropriate form for the purpose of conducting a background security check
• A current full clean driving licence, or, in the case of an applicant who declares that they have a disability which debars them from driving, access to a form of transport which will permit the post holder to meet the post requirements in full
• Own car or access to a car that enables individual to meet the requirements of the post in full
• Be prepared to travel frequently as part of the role 
• Be prepared to provide Special Olympics Ireland with permission to provide personal information to Garda Síochána (if successful candidate is a resident of the Republic of Ireland) for the purpose of conducting a background security check
